Course Description:
This seminar presents a comprehensive approach in offering cosmetic whitening efficiently and cost-effectively in your practice. In this decade, the economy has altered patients’ decisions on elective services but it has not admonished the need in dental care.

Cosmetic whitening can compliment high quality minimally-invasive dentistry as a practice builder and patient satisfaction tool. Depending on the patient’s personal value of this service, it will still play in important role in the consultation and treatment planning of all cases.

  • Brief historic review of how teeth whitening became popular in OTC/Professional delivery systems
  • Demographics who make up the greatest population who seeks this service
  • The client cases which produce the best results
  • Those clients who pose the greatest limitations for success in teeth bleaching
  • An overview of types of whitening processes to include: OTC, In-office professionally-supervised & take-home whitening deliveries
  • Address internal bleaching briefly – indication and difference with tooth whitening
  • Discuss the advantages of each previously-reviewed method of tooth whitening with careful consideration of cost/effect relationship for sustaining success
  • Lasers
  • Fluorosis/whitening (and micro enamel abrasion – PRĒMA®)
  • Safety – potential long-term effects based on product strength and product abuse?
  • Product recommendations that can provide ease in resolving transient sensitivity as well as enamel/dentinal protection following whitening procedures
  • Tooth whitening maintenance, hints and tips for patients/consumers
  • Use of remineralization and desensitization agents in preserving enamel post-whitening
  • Creating new marketing materials to introduce the service for the practice
caperila_lillian Lil Caperila has enjoyed over 35 years of experience in dental hygiene practice and teaching. In 2000, Lil accepted a position in the corporate environment as a Professional Educator and Manager of Education Programs with Premier Dental Products Company in Plymouth Meeting, PA. This role has afforded her the opportunity to deliver well over 500 seminars throughout the United States and among her colleagues internationally.

A graduate of Montgomery County Community College with an A.S. degree in applied science and certificate in dental hygiene, she has practiced in the Philadelphia area as a periodontal co-therapist for 24 years.

In 1989, Lil achieved her bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene education from Thomas Jefferson University and later completed her master’s degree in instructional design and training from Penn State University.

Lil served as the President of Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association in 1999-2000, and the recipient of the ADHA Irene Newman Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Advancement of Dental Hygiene as well as National Award for Student Advisor at Harcum College, Bryn Mawr, PA.

In 2009, Lil was selected as the first alumnus of her college to be named to their Alumni Hall of Fame at Montgomery County College. In 2014, the college selected Lil as one of their Fabulous 50 Alumni celebrated during their 50th anniversary.

Last month, Lil received confirmation as a contributing author for the chapter on Dentinal Hypersensitivity in a new dental hygiene textbook entitled: “Dental Hygiene: Applications to Clinical Practice” published by F.A. Davis, Philadelphia.

collins_fionaFiona has presented on dental caries and prevention, xerostomia, infection control, biofilm, sensitivity, tobacco cessation, dental materials, tooth whitening, and patient compliance. During her presentations, Fiona provides practical, science-based and thought-provoking information, involving the audience with an interactive approach. Her speaking experience has taken her throughout North America, as well as to Europe, the Pacific Rim and the Middle East. She has also participated as a faculty member at OSAP Boot Camps. Her writing experience has included CE articles, white papers, abstracts and newsletters. She is also a trainer and consultant, an editor for Dental Learning, and editor of the Pierre Fauchard Academy’s Dental World.

Dr. Collins is a member of the American Dental Association, ADA Standards working groups, American Association of Dental Research, Chicago Dental Society, and OSAP. She is the ADA representative to AAMI, and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. During her career, Fiona has lived and worked in five countries, and has held positions in clinical practice, education and industry. Dr. Collins graduated as a general dentist from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and holds an MBA and an MA from Boston University in the United States.
