Sharpening
Made Easy
Sharp instruments are
easier to use than dull instruments, do the work in less time
and leave clinicians less fatigued at the end of the day.
Why then, do so many dental professionals find they are routinely
using dull or ineffective instruments? The answer to this question
lies in the confusion about how to properly sharpen instruments.
Now, keeping your instruments sharp is easier than ever.
Premier's fully autoclavable D.I.S.C.™ instrument sharpener
eliminates the guesswork, is easy to use and offers predictable
results with every use.
Premier's D.I.S.C. sharpener
utilizes a built-in dial that lists the settings for all popular
instruments to guarantee that the correct angle is used for every
instrument. The D.I.S.C. uses ceramic stones which are easy
to maintain; they never require oil or water. The D.I.S.C.
sharpener costs hundreds of dollars less than other sharpeners,
making it the ideal choice to sharpen instruments at any time,
including chair-side touch-ups during routine scaling and root-planing
procedures.
Many clinicians have
learned to sharpen their instruments using a hand-held stone.
Using this method, it is often difficult to determine the proper
angle to hold the instrument to the stone, and maintain the instrument
at the correct angle during the sharpening process is no easy
task either.
The difficulty many
clinicians face when sharpening instruments is positioning the
cutting edge of the instrument properly against the stone and
maintaining that angle throughout the sharpening procedure.
The D.I.S.C. sharpener eliminates this dilemma by allowing the
clinician to focus on the instrument handle rather than the blade/stone
interface or the shank of the instrument. The reason that
this works is because all of the proper angulation has been calculated
for the clinician, without any guesswork. The operator simply
selects the correct setting on the protractor dial, rotates the
dial to the setting and secures that setting. Next, the
clinician simply keeps the handle (not the shank) of the instrument
parallel to the reference lines on the dial, while pulling the
tip along the stone.
Premier's D.I.S.C. sharpener
shows settings for many popular hygiene instrument settings.
For example, if you are sharpening a Gracey 1/2, the protractor
dial should be set to "G". Once that is set, the
handle of the instrument is kept parallel to the reference lines,
ensuring that the blade of the instrument is at the optimum position
in relationship to the stone and 2-3 pull strokes will sharpen
the instrument's cutting edge. To provide a rounded toe,
rotate the instrument in your hand while keeping parallel to the
reference lines.
